Our new car

We have a car. We would like to thank everyone who helped us purchase our little car. We have a '04 4-door Volkswagon Gol. One of the things we like best about our car is that it can run on gasoline or alcohol or any combination of the two. Alcohol is quite a bit cheaper than $6 a gallon gasoline.

Having a car is certainly more convenient than having to rely on the bus system, walking or taking taxis. Somedays we save a lot of time but others we are out longer because we usually end up giving lots of people rides. From taking our teammates home after a team event, to taking youth home Friday nights after devo, to taking people home with us after church for lunch, our little car is very often packed to the brim with people. And if it isn't packed with people it is full of stuff. Although our trunk is small it is amazing how much stuff we can get in it. It seems we are always toting something from one place to another. We even had a rack put on top of the car so we can carry all the luggage of our out of town guests. Kelton loves to ride in his car seat. He lets us know immediately if we have forgotten to lock him in.

Something we didn't expect when we bought our car was our increase in stress. Living in this megacity of 4 million, we have a lot of traffic. Also here in Brazil traffic laws are, shall we say, not enforced. We have become very Brazilian in the sense that we have learned the exact dimensions of our car very well. But we are getting used to driving here and are very thankful for the Lord's protection.

We are so grateful for the gift of this vehicle. Praise God for his provision.

I love my daddy!

Hi Everybody,
Sunday was Father's day here in Brazil. To make my daddy feel special we took him to Burger King, his favorite restaurant. He is the best daddy in the world. He plays soccer with me, we wrestle and we color together. I love it when we color in my dinosaur coloring book. My favoritest thing is when we go to the beach and spash in the waves. My daddy is the greatest!
Love,
Kelton James Porter

Loreina's Baptism-2
Originally uploaded by Salvadorporters.

This past week was a full one here in Salvador. On Thursday night we welcomed our new sister in Christ, Loreina. She has been studying with Mary Virginia and after a study on Thursday decided she was ready to commit her life to Christ in baptism.

The following day on Friday some of our friends had their new baby. Her name is Liz. She was just over 7lbs.

Please keep these two in your prayers this week please. (as well as Liz's new parents, Fabiano and Michelly)

Pe de Porco

This week I did something I never imagined doing. I went to butchers and bought a pig foot. I did not really enjoy buy the salted pig foot. In fact the butcher wanted me to pick out which one I wanted, and I couldn't really get across to him that I didn't care which one, I just wanted him to put one in a bag that I couldn't see through so I could leave the strong smelling salted meat area and stop looking at the hooved feet.

Why did I buy a pig foot, you ask? I obviously did not enjoy the process. But to tell you the truth I was thrilled to buy it. I bought it for feijoada. It is the national dish of Brazil. And Sunday we are having a potluck and feijoada is the main dish. I loved buying a pig foot because of what it represents. Sunday we are having a potluck. But why this potluck is so exciting is that it was not planned by the Mission Salvador team. It is being planned by our members. One of our members, Jaciara is having a birthday and she wanted to celebrate with her church families. So the ladies of the church have planned a meal for the church after worship on Sunday. They made a list of the ingredients needed for the supper and had people sign up to bring them.

Our members are planning and preparing a meal for our church family. God is growing his family here, and we are blessed to be a part of it.
